The Mamluk Sultanate and Three Dars: the Dar al-Islam, Dar al-Darb, and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah in Kuwait
After a brief introduction about the importance of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria (648-923/1250-1517) in Islamic history, this lecture focuses on the importance of Mamluk coinage as a source for the social and economic history of the Sultanate. It outlines major changes within the gold and silver coinage over the course of the Sultanate. Then it discusses the fascinating history of Mamluk copper coins, highlighting how the increased availability of published specimens has changed our sense of how these coins circulated and were valued. The paper concludes with a discussion of important collection of Mamluk coins housed in the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyah how those dinars, dirhams, and fulūs add to our knowledge of Mamluk monetary history
